Barry (is not) the antiChrist vs. Satchel Pooch

Thursday, October 9th, 2008 | cooking, interesting sites, rants | No Comments

The only good thing about Barry winning would be the I-Told-You-So’s that would be handed out left and right in a couple of years, after he screws us all up royally.

This site is hilarious -> http://www.barackobamaantichrist.blogspot.com/

(No, I don’t think he’s the antiChrist. Really, I don’t. I think he’s charismatic, brilliant, attractive, well-spoken, educated, deceitful, and withholding, and his wife is horse-faced, and that he’s the greater evil betwixt him and McCain [whom I'm not overly fond of, but I've only 2 choices], but I don’t think he’s the antiChrist.)

On a happier note, I am craving this mini tea cake pan from Crate and Barrel. How adorable is that?

It’s even on sale! (for now) There’s also this 4-Piece Cupcake Muffin Set (also from C&B), and this Cold Bowl on Ice server (yes, it’s really called that), from Chef’s Resource. Nifty!

On a side note, mercy, but I want one of these. It’s not like I don’t have zillion (OK, maybe eight) lunch boxes already. Mister, bless his heart, just grins and rolls his eyes. He understands my addiction. In the words of my beloved Satchel Pooch, “I’m not ashamed of my love.”

Food pr0n.

Oh. My. God, Betsy.

Pumpkin Spice Cream Cheese Spread

I am physical pain right now, because I want to make this - Right. Now. I’ll have to be satisfied with making it Saturday morning. Pics may follow, but I am quite the lowly, amateur photographer-type wannabe, and haven’t gotten the hang of snapping good photos of food.

Today was, well, sufficient. I went to work, had a decent day, came home, did a bit of cleaning, made supper (hah!), and sat down with my beloved Mister to watch last night’s episode of the Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Yes. Sufficient, indeed.

(Pardon me while I go shut the back door. It would seem, no matter how nice of a neighborhood one resides in, that there will always be the unmentionables who can’t touch the gas pedal without the thudding, ridiculous boom of music that no one else wishes to hear. My kingdom for a intelligence tax. [which I would go broke paying, as well.])

Handbag Planet, etc.

—————–

Oi, am I full. As money hasn’t been falling from the sky in 10K packs, I’ve decided to feed the freezer. A few nights ago, we made a metric ton (not literally) of spaghetti, hence the full feeling. I am one of the pathetically weird who don’t like onions or bell peppers, so we liven up our spaghetti sauce with things like black olives, mushrooms and pepperoni (and spices).

Mister likes the sauce rather chunky, like chili, and will eat it without the pasta. My carb-loving self loves a lot of noodles, unfortunately. We’re an odd version of Mr. & Mrs. Jack Sprat, methinks.

I’m off to watch the DVR’d episodes of Fringe, Sanctuary, Chuck and The Mentalist. w00t!

Saturday Love

Mixing up the red velvet cake batter. Nummy, and slightly evil looking.

Yesterday was everything a weekend day should be. Well, mostly.

I was up at 7AM because someone who shall remain nameless decided that they needed walkies (blame Katie MacAlister for that term, because it’s inexorably stuck in my head).

I watched several episodes of Charmed (I <3 my DVR), and set out to try my hand at making CakePops. Bakerella makes it look ridiculously easy, and her creations are pure beauty. She got the recipe several years ago from someone at a Christmas party, but came up with the great idea to make them Cake-Pops, instead of Cake-Balls, and again, ridiculously cute! The woman is seriously talented, and bless her heart for sharing her wonderful creations with peons like me. (snicker) Seriously, if you’ve not visited Bakerella.com, run (or click quickly) and browse to your heart’s content. Check out her Flickr photos, too. Fantastic!

Into the oven.

Imagine my surprise when I was setting up my mise en place, only to discover that I had not a single cake pan in my kitchen. Time for a quick trip to World Market, where I picked up a couple of respectable looking cake pans. Why I paid more for the nifty heat-resistant handles is beyond me, because I’m not going to reach in and grab the sides of the pans, at any rate. I get this happy, squiggly feeling in that store, because of all the nifty things they sell. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

Crumbly Fun

One cake turned out fine, and one turned out about the size of a thick pancake. Well, a very, very thick pancake, but still. Too thin. Thankfully, the cake layers were not destined to be stacked and eventually belittled, so I didn’t fret all that much.

After crumbling the cakes and mixing the crumbs with cream cheese frosting, I felt my first inkling of doubt. It looked…odd. I’d read somewhere in the comments of another site that one lady had trouble with the CakePops coming out gooey instead of ‘cakey’. Yeah, I had a bad feeling.

Next few steps:

Icing n Stuff

Oy, did these turn out warped.

All in all, they did turn out better than I thought. A little gooey-er than I thought, but after a few hours in the freezer, they were cute and even better - delicious. (Edited to add: They actually didn’t turn out gooey at all. They were lovely and cakey, and my friends and coworkers raved!) I’ve learned that I despise almond bark with the fire of a thousand hells, and these are definitely not something you just whip up in a matter of minutes (or an hour). But - with a lot of patience on my part, and a lot of great info from Bakerella and all of the other lovely ladies who’ve made these - I can actually create something edible!
